This has been a particularly frustrating clutter problem for me due to an extensive spice collection.

For years I’ve searched for the perfect solution without any luck, so I was thrilled to discover the Spice Stack.

3 Advantages of using the Spice Stack:

Not knocking over bottles while searching for one

Finding the needed spice with ease

Eliminating the purchase of duplicates

The Spice Stack holds 27 regular jars in three easy-to-pull-out drawers. I wasn’t concerned that the large, bulk-sized versions don’t fit since I only have a couple of them.

A sheet of pre-printed labels for commonly-used spices, as well as a sheet of blank labels, is included. Assembly is nothing more than adding your labels and spices.

You can place your spices in the drawers alphabetically or according to their use. I opted for organizing them alphabetically because I have so many. That is when I realized there were many duplicates simply because I didn’t know what I had.

The Spice Stack is made to fit in a cabinet, but I’m using it in the pantry. If you need more than one, they stack nicely.

I like how the drawers smoothly slide out and can then be lowered at an angle so you can get to them easily and they won’t fall out. The following video shows how easily they slide:

Another spicy tip

Write the month/year you purchased your spices on the bottom of the jar so you know when to replace them. They tend to lose their flavor over time.

Due to the number of jars I have, I’m ordering a second Spice Stack.

Disclosure: I received this from www.shopgetorganized.com without cost. The opinions, video and pictures are all my own.

Organize the contents

The chances of something getting lost in the back of the freezer are greatly reduced when you organize like items together. It’s also easier to see what you have.

Group items by categories on each shelf. For example:

Breakfast items – such as sausage, bagels, waffles, and juice cans

Vegetables/sides

Meats

Desserts/snacks – such as ice cream, Hot Pocket-type snacks, and popsicles

Mark frozen items with a date

If you like to stock up on meat while it is on sale or freeze 1/2 of dinner for another night, use a permanent marker to clearly write the date you froze the food item on the outside of the package. Most food tastes better if you use it within a few months.

Newer items go in back

Make sure you are using up your older items by placing newer ones in the back. Think of how a grocery store stocks their shelves with the oldest food items in the front. This assures you are using up your food while it is still tasty, and reduces the chances of things being forgotten in the back.

Did you know?

Frozen food is good indefinitely. Only the quality is reduced over time.

Find out more information on food safety and freezing foods at USDA’s website. Scroll all the way to the bottom of this fact sheet for a list of recommended storage lengths for optimum quality of your frozen foods.

Pantry cleaning

It’s a DEFCOM 1 red alert in my house!

Do you hear the sirens? A parental visit is on the horizon, and I have to get my house clean. Mom clean is not the same as my kid’s friend is coming over clean, you know.

I guess that is what inspired the cleaning of the pantry this week. What started out as a simple reorganization project turned out to be a huge painting ordeal.

The pantry had reached an all time low.

I can thank the kids and their constant digging in the pantry for a snack.

I’m not sure why they think the selection changes from hour to hour, but I have to assume they are hoping that a box of Pop Tarts miraculously beamed into the pantry while they were doing homework by some device that only exists in The Jetson’s cartoon.

I don’t try to understand that logic.

Empty the pantry

Remove everything from the pantry and clean off the shelves with some vinegar and water.

I realized that after 12 years of wear and tear, mine needed a new paint job as well, and I had to wait overnight for the paint to dry before continuing.

Organize the pantry

When returning the items back to your pantry, check expiration dates on everything.

Let me point out that I thought I had done this only a year ago, but it turns out I had some items that expired in 2007. Yikes!</strong

Did you have items older than 4 years expired? Make me feel better and let me know in the comments.

In a future article I will talk about scheduling big projects like these so 4 years don’t pass by before it is revisited. I could have sworn I just did it.

Organize like items together. I group items into the following categories:

Cereal

Pasta

Side Dishes

Vegetables and Fruits

Canned Meats

Soups

Baking items

Snacks – where the kids can go grab mac and cheese or popcorn without disturbing the rest of the pantry

Plastic ware, napkins, baggies

Use bins and containers to hold like items

I’m a big fan of containers. Here are a few ideas to help keep the pantry organized:

Extra spices and sauce packets

Packets and extra spices are put in containers to keep them from falling off the shelf. I have a spice rack for the spices I use the most, so this holds the odd, occasionally used spices.

Sprinkles, candles, baking extras

This container holds candles, sprinkles, and paper baking cups.

Add some shelf space on the floor

A shoe organizer offers extra shelf space in the bottom of the pantry. This is where all the soda and juice boxes go. OK, I need to refill that soon.

Shelve racks

I love the racks than hang from a shelf. I use one to hold all the aluminum foil, wax paper, and plastic wrap.

Use baskets

Baskets are an organizing lifesaver. I use them to hold my kitchen towels on the top. The shelf below is for baggies, cups, napkins, and plastic ware. I used a few plastic cups to sort the plastic ware that I use for the kids’ lunches. If they make it back home, I wash them and return them. Unused forks and spoons from fast food restaurants find a home here, too.

Aaa…a clean pantry again

Now my pantry is beautiful, and I’m beaming like I just created an artistic masterpiece.

I want to grab people off the street so they can admire it.

“What? My pantry is beautiful? Pffshh…it always looks that way.”

Shh…….don’t tell anyone.

Prevent clutter by working the following tasks into your daily routine until they become a habit. I’ve focused on the areas that will make the biggest “instant” improvement in five minutes or less.

EARLY AM

1) Get a load of laundry started.

If you have enough dirty clothes for a load, get them into the washer first thing in the morning. Move them to the dryer when they are finished.

Reduces pile-up of laundry and complaints from your child that her favorite jeans have been in the pile for a week.

2) Make your bed.

There is nothing that can neaten a large space in 2-3 minutes like making a bed.

The room feels cleaner. You paid a lot of money for that pretty comforter. Enjoy it the way it was intended to look, which is not wadded on the floor.

A special thanks to my mother for adding this tip to the list. Apparently you are never too old to have your mother remind you to make your bed.

AFTERNOON/EARLY EVENING

3) Take care of incoming mail immediately.

Trash/recycle the junk mail, and put the rest in the appropriate places (bills to pay, “to-do box”, magazine rack, “to-be-filed” basket, etc.). Do not place any of it on the counter.

Prevents paper clutter from accumulating around the house and bills from getting lost.

4) Fold and put away laundry.

Find a few spare minutes to fold and put away the load of laundry you did this morning. If you did more than one today, you are ahead of the game! Congratulations!

Prevents the laundry room from having piles of clean laundry as well as keeps it from being used as a dressing room.

EVENING

5) Kitchen cleanup

After dinner, take the time to wash all the dishes and run the dishwasher if it’s full. Wipe down the counters, cabinets, and appliances quickly.

Keeps the kitchen clean and the silverware drawer stocked. There’s nothing worse than eating your cereal with a fork!

6) Kitchen counter cleanup.

The counter tends to be a “drop-off” spot during the day. Take all items back to their assigned places. The counter is for food, snacks, etc., not paper clutter.

Keeps the kitchen area neat and orderly.

7) Nightly toy pick-up.

If you have kids, toys tend to make their way around the house quickly during the day. Get everyone involved with a quick 5-minute pickup to put everything back in its place.

Keeps living room/toy room organized and clutter-free. Say “good-bye” to the pain of stubbing your toe on a Barbie car or the shock of stepping on a Lego in a sleepy morning daze.

I like to wake up in the morning with my house in order. Mentally, it puts me in a better mood because I am not slapped in the face with things that need to be done on the way to making my coffee. I also find I am more productive during the day when the house is free of clutter.

How is your junk drawer looking these days?

After getting stabbed in the finger by a stray thumbtack, I spent a few minutes straightening my kitchen junk drawer today. It wasn’t horrible but warranted a quick cleanup.

I found a few buried treasures under the pencils that didn’t belong in the drawer. My kids tend to throw stuff they consider “junk” in the drawer and hope I don’t notice.

Dump the contents of the drawer on a table or in a box and wipe out the drawer and the containers with a cloth. Set your containers back in the drawer and place all the items back in a sorted manner.

Drawer organizers are great for holding little things like thumbtacks, paper clips, etc. If you find a few items that don’t belong in the drawer, take them to their appropriate places.

In five minutes you will have a neat, organized drawer again.

Wow what a difference

I received these before and after pictures from a wonderful lady who will remain anonymous. Look at the difference between the before and after pictures. Impressive! Great job!

What do you do with the stack of recipes you want to try?

You know…that pile of paper you ripped out of magazines, printed from online, or a friend emailed you. Mine were just stuck in a file and forgotten about until I found a great solution.

Easily organize them into your own custom cookbook

You will need:

one 1.5″ 3-ring binder (wide)

a set of tabs (wide)

some clear sheet protectors

Label your tabs in the categories you like (Main Dishes, Sides, Desserts, Breads…etc). Now slip your recipes into the sheet protectors and place them behind the category they fit in. Don’t forget you can use the front and back (two recipes per page if they are only a page long).

Now you have your own “Try-It” Cookbook that is ready to be used. You can add and take out recipes at anytime, so it is a constantly evolving cookbook. If your family gives the thumbs down on one, just toss it.

I like to add a note at the top of the recipe if there is something I would do differently next time or a star if we really liked it. You could even add a tab for “Family Favorites” and move the recipe into this category if it is a “hit”.

I use a “Special Occasions” tab for fun, crafty cooking ideas, for example, how to make snowmen out of marshmallows and candies, the awesome Jell-O Pudding Halloween haunted graveyard instructions, cake decorating ideas, etc.

Now those recipes you want to try are organized and easily accessible the next time you plan your meals. I have been using mine a lot since I put it together, and my family is thrilled to have new meals to try out.
