Combat stress by tackling the mess

Stress levels escalate with clutter

We have enough stress in our lives with jobs, kids, school, and bills.

Your home should be a place where you feel relaxed.

One look at this closet causes a sick feeling in my stomach.

Why? Finding something in this pile seems impossible. Just the thought of cleaning it is exhausting.

A large mess can quickly cause your mood to change from happy to gloomy and leave you feeling overwhelmed.

Organization relieves stress

organized closetWalking into an organized closet, I can see everything and find exactly what I am looking for. No added stress there.

With a little organization, a messy room can be transformed into a stress-free haven. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be perfect.

Set small attainable goals

Focus on one area at a time. If your problem room is the living room, pick a specific area to tackle first, such as straightening a bookcase or getting all the toys back to the kids’ rooms.

With each completed step, you will see progress as the room begins to transform into an inviting space, and this will motivate you to continue.

Cleaning the house can be therapeutic

I find that hand-scrubbing a floor or mowing the grass while listening to good music is surprisingly calming. The feeling of accomplishment when the job is done helps me relax.

Ways to combat stress:

  • Cleaning – Focusing on a task can take your mind off things.
  • Exercise – A brisk 20-30 minute walk in the fresh air is refreshing.
  • Read – Losing yourself in a story can help you unwind.
  • Games – Whether you are challenging the kids to a game of Monopoly or playing a game yourself on the computer, it’s a fun way to relax.
  • Music – Music can be an instant mood changer and makes a routine task more enjoyable.
  • Nap – A 20 minute power nap can leave you feeling refreshed. Sleep away your worries.
  • Working or playing outdoors – Again, the fresh air is invigorating.

lol I’m sure it isn’t that bad. You will just have to tackle it a piece at a time. I tend to find my shoes messed up since the 4 year old likes to go play fashion show with them.

  3. Your closet picture looks like my whole room when my son goes on his rampage. I try to conquer 1 room at a time when the weekend comes and everyone pitches it to clean that particular room/area regardless of who owns or uses it. Those are some great tips. Thanks for sharing.

LOL My daughter’s room used to get to that point. That’s a good idea getting them to pitch in. They only mess up the main room now. Glad I don’t seem to have to get on them about their rooms anymore. Except the 4 year old who is a tornado everywhere. :)

Good idea to get everyone involved…especially when they like to contribute to making the mess.

This is so true. When I start feeling really stressed, it often means it’s time to clean all this stuff that I’ve been letting pile up on my desk. It’s instant relief when it’s all elsewhere. And every once in awhile, if I really need a major mental break, cleaning the dishes in the kitchen or folding clothes can help. But not too often; don’t want my wife getting used to me doing it. lol

LOL, Mitch. You don’t want to be too productive or you might win the job. My desk drives me crazy if it gets piled up. I have to clean it immediately for my sanity’s sake.

No argument from me here – I definitely need to move more to feel less stressed, or even just less “down.” It’s a great post and I hope this gets more of an audience.

Thanks for the comment on my blog while I was gone. I hope to post for a few more days then take another hiatus. I have a 1000 entries: at some point, they have to “kick in” and get attention for themselves.
