Fooducate is an iPhone app that can help you make some quick product comparisons with just a scan of the UPC bar code. It only works on US products at the moment.
You have instant access to helpful nutritional information:
Grade: Each product is given a grade with A-B representing the better choices.
Calories: Lists the calories per serving

- Contains trans-fats
- 2.5 tsp of sugar per serving
- Contains controversial artificial colors
It is able to identify problem items in the ingredient list that you might not be familiar with.
Beyond Nutritional Statistics
The thing I love most about this app is the ability to find better alternatives to this item. If you click the “alternatives” tab, a list of other choices and their grades allow you to do some comparison.
You can either scan a product bar code or manually enter in a food item.
I was shocked at the bad grade for items I thought were healthy snacks. It’s a real eye opener to discover what some manufacturers sneak into their products.
By the way, the app is FREE!! If you have an iPhone, you can find it at the iTunes app store.
Hi Melinda,
Fooducate has over 200,000 UPCs (unique products) which is amazing. Many diet apps have been created but this one stands out for one more reason: It is designed by dietitians.
I will download it to my iPod.
Such a handy app to be able to get all the information quickly.
Hello,
What a great concept! I didn’t know that this app existed, but I’m thrilled to find out. I will download that before my next grocery shopping trip.
By the way, I can’t wait to dive deeper into your site, because I’m tired of being unorganized!!
Thank you,
Kathy
Thanks Kathy! Beware..I got a little addicted looking up things on it. ha ha
As long as it doesn’t get addictive, this is a great every day tool. I hate it when producers use scientific name to disguise a bad ingredient. Maybe this app can help.
Hi Mel…This is very helpful to all people especially the mothers because they can easily make new recipes or even alternative ones for their cooking…I will try this downloading and let’s see what will be the outcome of this app… Anyway, thanks Mel for the information and update that you have posted here…
I never knew such an app existed but such a shame that it works only for US! I was told that there is another app which gives you a list of weight losing recipes, along with how to prepare them and all information on calories, protein intake etc
Wow. What a very helpful and convenient application on iPOD! Thanks for the info Mel. his can really help diet conscious people and household moms having trouble preparing their meals. It has all the dietary plans a health conscious person needs. now that’s way too cool.
What an awesome app. I’ll install it on my Ipad. First time I hear about this kind of app. Great share!
Have a good day,
Anita
Cool App for your Iphone. One reason why I cant leave my Iphone at home while buying some food at the grocery store. Its quite handy for a health conscious person like me.
Thanks, I’ll have to get the app, always looking to trim a few ponds here and there plus the app will help me to make better food choices.
This is a very good resource of getting healthier food of your choice. Most of us were unaware of this fact. Thanks to you Melinda for providing such a useful information. Also like to say that your blog is very much cool.
Thanks for sharing this cool handy application that can get all the information quickly. It’s been a great help for those health conscious consumers like us, also for me as a nutritionist.
