Searching for a practical gift for a new graduate venturing into the world of cooking, a housewarming present, or a useful wedding gift? Look no further. I've compiled a list of a few of my favorite kitchen tools that span a wide price range, accommodating any budget. These are the essentials I use consistently, if not daily.
Zester Tool
Under $10
Enhancing a recipe with the vibrant flavor of lemon zest becomes a breeze when armed with the appropriate tool. Unlike some culinary endeavors, improvising this process isn't quite as straightforward. A few specialized tools can elevate a new chef that is looking to expand their cooking skills.
Meat Thermometer
Around $10
I always struggled to recall the "done" temperature for various types of meat, despite owning a set with individual thermometers for poultry, pork, and beef. Recently, I stumbled upon a game-changer on Amazon—a single thermometer that eliminates the guesswork by boldly displaying the recommended temperatures for each type of meat right on its surface.
Apple Slicer
Around $12
I have a soft spot for apples, but slicing them has always been a bit of a chore. Thankfully, I discovered a game-changing tool that not only cores but also slices effortlessly in one go.
Recently, I came across an upgraded version on Amazon, and I'm contemplating making the switch. This new model features an additional component that you flip after cutting through the apple, providing that extra push to smoothly guide the blade through the final portion. In my view, this design not only enhances efficiency but also significantly boosts safety during use.
Large Mixing Bowl with Handle and Top
Around $25 - less when on sale.
My kitchen wouldn't be the same without my trusty set of mixing bowls, each equipped with its own lid. I've got three in varying sizes—large, medium, and small—and they're indispensable in my daily culinary adventures. From effortlessly whipping up chicken salad to conveniently storing leftovers for later microwave feasts, these bowls have become my everyday kitchen staples.
Vegetable Chopper
Around $30-40 - depending on sales
My chopper is a workhorse in my kitchen, seeing daily use and earning its keep over the years. I've replaced it several times when the blades get dull, but I can't imagine cooking without it. Whether tackling hefty vegetable chopping or effortlessly processing nuts, it's become my go-to for simplifying these tasks in the recipes I enjoy regularly.
Magic Bullet Blender
Around $40-50 - Can find it on sale often
Dealing with my sizable blender can be a hassle when it comes to washing up. However, the love for smoothies and milkshakes in our family has this appliance working overtime. The ease of both use and cleanup makes it a constant fixture in our routine. Additionally, I've found it handy for whipping up marinades that might have been too small a batch for the larger blender.
Pampered Chef Large Bar Pan
14.75" x 10.5" Around $82-$100 - Can find it on sale often
If you've never tried stoneware, you're missing out on the perfect baking companion. It ensures even baking, achieving that ideal golden brown on both the top and bottom of cookies. With regular use, it gains character as it darkens. Despite its less-than-appealing appearance (See photo), my stoneware has become my go-to for various cooking needs.
I no longer bother with oil sprays; this pan boasts a flawless non-stick surface after seasoning through multiple uses. It's a regular player in my kitchen routine, handling everything from cookies and homemade pizza to roasting vegetables, Chex Mix, and more several times a week.
However, stoneware comes with its caveats. Cleaning involves only water and the provided scraper. Plus, it demands an even spread of food on the pan to avoid the risk of cracking in two—an unfortunate fate my first one met after over a decade of use.
I prefer the large size for its versatility, but I also own the small, toaster oven-friendly version. The bar pans are available in small (toaster oven size), medium, and large, catering to different needs.
