One of the biggest problems that home owners face is not utilizing space properly.
From overfilled rooms to cluttered corners, spaces seem to become smaller every single day. If you fall into this category, chances are that you aren’t making the most of the space in your home.
The following tips will be beneficial in helping you take back your space.
-
Get rid of stuff you do not need.
To make the most of your space, this step is a MUST. You have to go through all the “stuff” you have and get rid of things that you don’t need. If you haven’t used it recently, or do not particularly care for it, get rid of it!
-
Get organized.
Staying organized is the key to making the most of any space in your home. Spend the day getting organized. You will feel immediate relief once you know where everything is. Find a home for everything and make sure it stays put.
-
Bring in more storage.
Making the most or your space involves finding storage solutions. You can actually purchase storage binds, organizers, etc. to add to your space that will give it a neat, classy look. While it may take up some room, the space will feel larger because things are put neatly away.
-
Utilize unused spaces.
Are there any wasted spaces in your home? Many times, bedroom closets, stairwells, and alcoves can be culprits for wasted space. Make sure that you are utilizing each and every inch of your home. Add in shelves for convenience and storage.
-
Find a creative way to position furniture.
Furniture will undoubtedly take up the most space in your home. Finding a creative way to position furniture will leave your space feeling larger and more organized.
-
Think outside of the box in terms of furniture.
When choosing pieces for your space, be sure to get the most out of it. Thinking outside the box is sometimes necessary, especially if your space is really small. Instead of using end tables, use night stands with storage. This is just one example.
-
Choosing the right color.
Color can make a huge difference in your space. For smaller spaces, choose light, soft colors to make the room appear larger. Dark colors tend to make a room feel drab and closed in.
-
Adding in mirrors.
Mirrors do wonders in small spaces. Large mirrors help the room seem more spacious. A mirror is a must have for any space.
-
Lighting counts.
How is the lighting in your home? Changing up lighting can have a dramatic impact and help you get the most out of your space. Lighting that is bulky or too large will draw attention to the ceiling. Be sure to scale the lighting to fit your space.
-
Keep toys where they belong.
If you have little ones running around, it can be difficult keeping the toys where they belong. Toys usually end up in every single room in the home. Teach your kids where the toys belong. The toys should have a designated space.
-
Keeping the space clutter free.
Rooms filled with tons of stuff can seem stuffy and unorganized. Keep the space clutter free for a clean, spacious feel. Limit knick knacks, wall art, etc. to just a few simple pieces if the room is overly small.
-
Allow for open space.
Get out of the mindset that every single corner in your house has to be filled. Leave a few walls open so that the room doesn’t have a crammed look. Open and airy is the way to go.
-
Invest in book cases.
Book cases can do far more than just store a few hundred books. They are the ultimate storage solutions and can be used in any room in the house. In kitchens, they can serve for a lack or cabinet space to organize dishes. In bathrooms they can hold towels, washrags, soap etc. There are limitless uses for book case. However, you must keep them clean and de-cluttered for them to effectively serve their purpose of making the most of your space.
-
Make sure the space is comfortable and livable.
What is the use of creating a space in your home, if your family or friends cannot be comfortable in it? Make the most of your space by creating a comfortable atmosphere that people will want to enjoy. Use comfortable fabrics. Going overly fancy will not be inviting.
-
Maintain the space once you are satisfied.
Once you get the space the way that you want it, it is important to maintain it. Don’t do all the hard work only to have to do it over again in the near future.
The tips above will help you make the most of any space in your home. How long will you wait to get the space that you truly desire? Get started today!

It is true that it is not easy to utilize the space properly whether it is a home or a room. It is a good thing that there are bright and light colors in most of the rooms in my home. I didn’t know that mirrors and lightning would help in small spaces. Maybe I should maintain my room to be free from clutter and maintain the space.
When it comes to organizing the home, i think that ikea offers the simplest, yet nicest solution: boxes, cases, baskets etc.
Indeed, light colors brighten a room, and makes it more spacious, and when it comes to gaining space – less furniture is definitely more.
I really did not know about the trick with mirrors. What kind of mirrors are we talking here? The square ones or you know the ones which come in special shape? Also I believe another important thing is that a person must try not to keep a lot of things, try to giveaway things you do not use or why not have a yard sale?
I think your post to be suitable for everyone who is interested in valuable resources. Thanks for sharing such a helpful post, keep up the good work.
Thanks for this! I am still working on #1 – decluttering is a huge thing on my to-do list! I try to just do 1 or 2 spaces per weekend! Also, I agree about the toys – my kiddos like to have toys everywhere, I am thinking about limiting them to certain spaces (like, their room, not mine!)
Great tips! I think I need to do a few of these. With seven people living in the same house it gets cluttered fast.
If you are able, I would suggest installing curtains to show a difference between areas, almost as a wall would do. Different lighting in each ‘room’ helps, also. I’ve also found that light colored paint and lighter colored furniture pieces help the room seem larger. Also using dual purpose furniture will help – a murphy bed, day bed or futon will help tremendously.
This is such good advice. De-cluttering is always #1 for me and I agree with Andrea I take it bit by bit as it can be overwhelming. I wonder sometime, where did all this stuff come from? Our house is small the rule now is if you bring something in then something must go to keep the status quo.

I’m good at getting rid of things we don’t use or need any more. I’m not a hoarder, nor do I buy too much stuff. These are all great ways of making the best of your space.
Using mirrors in your space can make a room look bigger and beautiful. Mirrors have the capacity to increase the dimension of a certain space.
You are so right about maintaining being the hardest part! I like re-arranging the rooms in my house, but keeping them neat is very difficult.
Thanks for the great article!
