From work tasks to entertainment, computers have become an integral part of our lives. Just like any other tool or device, computers require regular maintenance to ensure they run smoothly and efficiently. If you've noticed your computer running slow or experiencing performance issues, it might be time for a "spring cleaning" session. Note: this article is for PC owners.
Review and Remove Unnecessary Files
Over time, your computer accumulates various files and documents that might no longer serve a purpose. Take some time, at least once or twice a year, to review your files and identify those you no longer need. These could include old documents, downloaded files, or temporary items left behind by applications.
Instead of letting them clutter your system, consider archiving or transferring them to external storage devices like USB drives, external hard drives, or cloud storage. Once you've securely stored important files, you can safely delete them from your computer, freeing up more space and improving overall performance.
Free Up Hard Drive Space
Your computer creates a lot of temporary files that can take up a significant amount of space. If you have a Windows 10 or 11 PC, this tutorial video will help you clean up your hard drive. NOTE: Be careful with the last step of uninstalling unused files. There are some things you may not recognize but your computer needs them. If you are unsure, skip this step. If you see programs you added but don't use anymore, then you are probably safe to uninstall them.
Protect Your Computer with Security Software
If you are using a Windows PC, ensure that the built-in security software is activated and schedule regular scans.
Keep the Operating System Updated
Keeping your operating system up to date is of utmost importance for several crucial reasons.
- Software updates often include essential security patches that address known vulnerabilities. By staying current, you reduce the risk of falling victim to cyberattacks and malware that target outdated systems.
- Updates often come with performance enhancements and bug fixes, leading to improved overall system stability and smoother operation.
- Developers continuously refine their software to be compatible with newer technologies and applications. By updating your operating system, you ensure that your computer remains compatible with the latest software and hardware innovations.
Maintaining an up-to-date operating system is a fundamental step in safeguarding your data, enhancing system performance, and keeping your computer running efficiently.
Just like any other valuable possession, computers require regular care and maintenance to operate optimally. By following these simple tips, even non-technical users can keep their computers running smoothly, enhance performance, and extend their lifespan. Regularly free up hard drive space, review and remove unnecessary files, clean up internet clutter, and invest in anti-virus software to ensure your computer remains a reliable and efficient tool for your daily tasks and activities.

I’ll just add that the most important thing you do for your computer isn’t clean up files, but get the recommended updates meant to fix bugs that can be a problem later, and clean up spyware and malware.
Lots of Internet use also adds pages to the cache that aren’t scripted well, and that consumes enormous resources even when you aren’t looking. So hitting “clear history” once in a while isn’t a bad idea.

Great added advice! I find clearing the history and cache occasionally makes a difference in how it runs.
